Best Motocross Tracks in California and the Southwest
Which Motocross Tracks in the Southwest Are Actually Worth Your Time?
I've coached at tracks all over California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. Some of them are world-class. Some of them look great on Instagram and disappoint in person. Here's my honest take on the tracks where the MX Factory runs Technique Tour clinics and why each one earns a spot on the schedule.
What's the NorCal Track Scene Like?
DT1 MX in Tulare sits in the San Joaquin Valley and has become one of my favorite places to coach. The valley loam is something special when it's prepped well. Firm, fast, grippy. Riders can actually feel technique adjustments working immediately because the dirt rewards precision. We run clinics here multiple times a year and they consistently fill because word gets around about how good this track is.
MMX in Marysville is north of Sacramento in the agricultural flatlands. Dedicated NorCal following. Solid jumps, technical corners, and a surface that shifts with the seasons. The rider community up here is tight and they show up ready to work, which makes coaching them a blast.
Riverfront MX is also in Marysville but rides completely differently than MMX. Having two tracks in one town gives local riders variety, and both host clinics during the season.
How Different Is the SoCal Riding Experience?
Lake Elsinore MX has been part of Southern California motocross for decades. Sitting between LA and San Diego, it draws from a massive riding population. Classic hardpack with rocks and decomposed granite mixed in. Technical, fast, and it will humble you. I've watched riders who think they're fast at their home track get a reality check at Elsinore within two laps.
Perris Raceway is another SoCal institution in the Inland Empire. The track design is what sets it apart. Elevation changes and rhythm sections that separate fast riders from smart riders. The dirt is typical SoCal hardpack, but the layout keeps things honest.
Both tracks draw riders from LA, Orange County, San Diego, and the entire IE. When we run a clinic here, the skill range in the group is wild because SoCal just has that depth.
What's Desert Riding Really Like?
Sandy Valley MX is about 45 minutes southwest of the Vegas Strip, but it feels like another planet. Deep desert sand. Wide open. And heat that will test everything you've got from April through October. If you want to build sand skills and real fitness, this track delivers. I always tell riders to come during the cooler months. October through March is when Sandy Valley is at its best.
Maricopa Motorsports Park south of Phoenix has grown into one of the Southwest's top facilities. Multiple configurations, solid maintenance, and a riding community that shows up consistently. Arizona dirt is its own thing. Sandy but firmer than Vegas. Dusty and fast.
Same deal with timing. October through March. Summer temps hit 110 regularly and I'm not running a six-hour clinic when the track surface could fry an egg.
Is New Mexico Worth the Trip?
Heart Bar MX in Tularosa offers something none of the other Southwest tracks can match: altitude. Over 4,000 feet. The air is thinner, the dirt is different, and the whole riding experience feels unlike anywhere else in the region. It's more remote, sure. But riders who make the trip always come back wanting more.
How Do These Tracks Compare Side by Side?

Why Does Track Variety Make You a Better Rider?
The thing about the Southwest that you can't replicate anywhere else is the range. Valley loam in NorCal. Hardpack in SoCal. Deep sand in Vegas. Desert clay in Arizona. Rocky terrain at altitude in New Mexico. Riding across this region makes you a more complete rider because no two tracks feel the same.
That's exactly why I love coaching out here. The dirt forces riders to adapt, and adaptation is where real growth happens.
California literally invented American motocross. The sport's DNA is in this soil. Knowing where the good tracks are is step one. Getting faster at them is the real goal. The MX Factory runs Technique Tour clinics at all of these facilities throughout the year. Pick a track, grab a spot, and come ride.
