Alumni | MMX Marysville Technique Tour

Alumni Early Access

You trained with us. You're up first.

Coach Tyler is bringing the Technique Tour to MMX in Marysville, CA on Sunday, January 10, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.* Because you've trained with us before, you have a $50 training credit for this class.

*Heads up: this class runs on MMX's night track, not the main track. Class runs 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
The training credit expired on 11/7. Thank you for riding with us. The class is still open below.
What changes the second time

Same system. A different rider.

Fair question: will it be different from the last one? The six positions don't change. What changes is you.

  1. Yes, new dirt.If MMX's night track is a track you haven't trained at with us yet, it's new dirt: new corners and new lines that show you what stuck from your last class and what slid back to old habits.
  2. Habit reinforcement. You already know the six positions, so the drills and the motos between them become reps instead of new information. The habits that crept back in since your last class get reset.
  3. End-of-class section and jump work. The class ends on one section, usually a corner into a jump, and most of that time goes to the jump side. Riders who've been through it once get more out of it, because they're not still thinking about where their feet go.
The core of the system

Drill. Laps. Repeat.

DrillOne skill, broken down and repeated until it clicks.
→
1 to 2 lapsGo apply it on the track, at speed, right away.
→
Next drillBuilds on what you just rode. Then back out again.

After every single drill, you ride 1 to 2 laps on the track and put it to work. Learn it, apply it, then the next drill. That rhythm runs all day, and it's what makes our program different from a day of drills or a day of riding laps.

A second class goes deeper into that rhythm. You're not learning what each drill is anymore, so more of every lap goes to applying it, and every drill-and-lap cycle becomes another rep on habits you already built.

What the research says

There is a reason we never run drills for an hour and then turn you loose. Motor learning research has found for decades that skills carry over best when you practice them in the setting where you will use them. So every drill goes straight onto the track for a lap or two while it is fresh. Feedback sinks in when you go apply it yourself, not when someone keeps talking. And your brain keeps working on a new skill after you leave. Studies on movement skills show spaced sessions tend to beat one long day, which is why a second class builds on the first instead of repeating it.

What great coaches say about practice

“The goal is to create a correct habit that can be produced instinctively under great pressure.”John Wooden, 10-time NCAA champion basketball coach
“You have to train the brain using repetition and building little blocks so that you've got a little wall.”Aldon Baker, motocross and supercross trainer
“Everything goes into the learning. Everything is a learning experience.”Ryan Dungey, AMA Supercross and Motocross champion
